The wood decided the rim, not me.

A crotch blank cut in January, still green enough to flex on the chuck. The natural edge was buried under bark until the first pass revealed it — a live edge that dips and rises like a slow breath. Finished with three coats of Danish oil, each one rubbed back with 0000 steel wool.

I pushed the gouge through a wet inclusion at 900 RPM. The catch sent the piece into the wall. I remounted it. The scar became the signature.

Cherry darkens like memory — slowly, then all at once.

Turned from a limb section salvaged from a storm-downed tree in a neighbor's yard. At the lathe it was pale cream. Six months later it had deepened to this amber. The figure in the end-grain face only appears after the third sanding pass — hidden until you commit to finishing.

The foot was too thin. I was chasing weight and went through the bottom. Remounted, reversed, turned a recess into a feature — a carved well that now holds a candle.

You can't see inside. That's the point.

Spalting is decay interrupted — black zone lines drawn by competing fungi before the wood dries. The wall is 4mm throughout, measured with a double-ended caliper through a 22mm opening. The inside has never been photographed. The outside is all the story you get.

I went too fast on the shoulder curve and the form went oval. I trued it up and kept going. Now the ovality is 0.3mm — invisible to the eye, present to the hand.
